User Research
To Understand and meet the needs of our university community, our group use surveys to conduct comprehensive user research. We find out there are lack comfortable and safe space for students to rest between the gap of each class time. Student in University of Washington want to have some safe, cozy and privacy space for them to take a power nap during a busy day.
Ideate
The Nap Lounge provides a tranquil space for the university community to rest during gaps between classes or activities. Designed to offer a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, the lounge ensures that everyone can rest comfortably.
As soon as visitors enter the lounge, they are greeted by a welcoming front desk near the entrance. Our attentive staff is available to help users locate available nap rooms or guide them to their reserved spaces. The lounge layout prioritizes user convenience: standard nap rooms are centrally located, while accessible nap rooms, with enhanced features and extra space, are nearer to the entrance. Amenities such as a restroom and two drinking fountains are also thoughtfully integrated for added convenience.
Each standard nap room is partitioned with blackout curtains for privacy and equipped with comfortable seating options like chairs or sofas for users to recline and rest. Every nap room includes a side table with a charging station and a lamp with adjustable brightness.
Accessible nap rooms offer all the features of a standard room but are larger and furnished with specialized furniture for accessibility. For hygiene, each room has a sanitizer dispenser at the entrance. The restroom is positioned in a private and easily accessible corner, and the two drinking fountains are strategically located near the restroom and at the back of the lounge. Our goal is to create a space that is not only functional and accessible but also comfortable and conducive to rest and relaxation.
Usability Testing
To make sure the Husky Nap Lounge functionality and comfort of the Nap Lounge is match user's need. We developed a prototype and invited 5 different users to experience it in the same time. The usability testing involved tasks such as checking in, locating nap rooms, and using amenities, ensuring that each aspect of the lounge met our users' needs.
We also carefully tested safety, privacy, and hygiene protocols. Scenarios were crafted to evaluate how well the design maintained user privacy and safety, with particular attention to the functionality of room locks, and staff assistance. Hygiene assessments included simulating regular use and cleaning cycles, gathering feedback on perceived cleanliness, and the effectiveness of sanitizer dispensers.
Limitations
People have different preferences and comfort levels when it comes to sleeping or resting. While we strive to make the lounges as comfortable as possible, we cannot guarantee that the environment will suit everyone. For example, the Nap Lounges are designed primarily for individual use and may not cater well to students who prefer or need to rest in groups. Those who feel safer or more comfortable sleeping around friends or peers might find the individual-focused design less appealing.
The effectiveness of our design depends on the availability and accessibility of the chosen locations. Despite our efforts to select central and commonly frequented spots, students in remote parts of the campus may find it inconvenient to reach the Nap Lounges. Additionally, during peak times, high demand might lead to overcrowding or waiting times.
Despite our measures, such as the Husky ID requirement and on-site personnel, some students may still feel uncomfortable sleeping in a public area. There are also concerns about unattended belongings, which could lead to theft or damage.
Retro
Looking back on the design and development process of the Husky Nap Lounge, we are proud of the progress we have made in addressing the student need for a private rest space on campus. Our user research and testing phases were important steps in shaping a lounge that meets the diverse needs of our community. User research and testing helped us understand user needs and how to provide a good user experience to them.
However, the process has also highlighted areas for Husky Nap Lounge growth. Through user research and testing, we learned that people have different preferences and comfort levels when it comes to sleeping or resting. While we try to make the lounges as comfortable as possible, we cannot guarantee that the environment will suit everyone. To address this limitation and further enhance the Nap Lounge experience, we plan to continuously gather user feedback through surveys and suggestion boxes to identify areas for improvement and use this feedback to make iterative changes to the lounge design, amenities, and services.
As we move forward, we remain committed to refining the Nap Lounge to better serve our university community. Our goal is to create an inclusive, adaptable, and welcoming environment where everyone can find the rest and relaxation they need.
